What is The Difference Between Cellophane With OPP Material?

Since most of us don’t have access to a professional laboratory or the time to send film samples for chemical analysis, here are a couple of practical suggestions to help you determine if the film you are holding is genuine cellophane.

1. The "Memory" Test (The Fold Test)

First, it is important to understand a key physical characteristic: most synthetic films (such as polypropylene or "cello") possess what is known as "memory." In other words, if you fold or crinkle them, they tend to spring back to their original form.

True cellophane, being a cellulose-based product, does not have this memory. It behaves much like paper. If you fold a piece of genuine cellophane, the crease will remain sharp and it will stay folded. If the film bounces back or unravels itself, it is likely a synthetic plastic, not cellophane.

2. The Burn Test

Another definitive way to identify the material is by using fire.

Because cellophane is a wood-derivative product (cellulose), it will burn similarly to paper. It will ignite and leave behind a brittle, black, ash-like residue. In contrast, if the film is synthetic (like polypropylene or other plastics), it will typically shrink, melt, and tend to disappear or drip rather than turning into ash.

By using these simple methods, you can quickly distinguish between natural cellophane and its synthetic counterparts.
